The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has announced a new award category for the “Patents for Humanity” program, which provides business incentives and recognition to those inventions that confront global humanitarian issues. The newest “Green Energy Category” aims to recognize those who are responding to the challenges generated by climate change by developing sustainable energy sources and technologies.
“The Patents for Humanity Award was recently codified into law when President Biden signed the Patents for Humanity Act of 2022. It is the USPTO’s top honor for patent applicants devising game-changing innovations to address long-standing development challenges.”
Some benefits granted by the program include an expedited process and public recognition of their work in helping create a more sustainable, affordable, inclusive, and scalable world. Those eligible to apply are patent owners, patent applicants, or patent licensees whose inventions address climate change through green energy technologies.
The newest category includes inventions that address global warming by using green energy technologies and fuels like:
- Wind
- Solar
- Green hydrogen
- Hydropower
- Geothermal
- Biofuel
In the current state of the world, climate change represents a global emergency. The increasing temperatures, lack of rain, shorter winters, and a spike in natural hazards contribute to inflation, famine, financial instability, and social inequality worldwide. Those inventions that provide an environmental benefit by generating sustainable, greener, or cleaner energy are encouraged and supported by the program to improve the quality of life.
The USPTO states that “To apply, you will be asked to describe how your technology is providing an environmental benefit by making energy renewable, sustainable, cleaner, or greener. You will also be asked to tell the story of your invention and to include any data that shows the effectiveness of your technology. You may include additional information for consideration, such as a short video and/or published academic articles.”
The deadline for submission to be eligible for the 2023 “Patents for Humanity” award is June 1, 2023.
