He has substantial experience in patent licensing, prior art searching, due diligence, prosecution, opinion, reexamination, and litigation. He has handled cases that involve complex technologies that range from electrical engineering to mechanical engineering, software, and medical devices. Craige has enjoyed particular success in protecting and licensing clients’ complex green technologies that radically improve energy efficiency.

Craige brings a unique blend of legal, technical and entrepreneurial experience to Thompson Patent Law clients, including Google, Apple, Intel, Honeywell, Boston Scientific, Hallmark, Gillette, Duracell, SAP, Olympus, Applied Materials, LeCroy, and the University of Minnesota.

Growing up in an entrepreneurial environment, Craige worked in his father’s business from the time he was 5 years old through college. Craige attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering.

Before attending law school, Craige had significant technical experiences in analog design, power electronics, magnetics, and product development. He was a Design Engineer in the Product Development Group for Plexus Technology Group where he specialized in analog circuits, power supplies, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and PCB design. He was also a Research Assistant at the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC).  Craige also earned the Professional Engineer (PE) license while living in North Carolina.

After working for several years as an engineer, Craige attended the University of Wisconsin Law School where he graduated cum laude and received his Juris Doctorate.

Prior to establishing his current patent law practice, Craige’s legal experience involved a uniquely balanced mix of all phases of the patent life cycle. He practiced in the Twin Cities office of Fish & Richardson P.C. During those years, Fish & Richardson routinely ranked at or near the top of all patent firms in both patent litigation and patent prosecution.

All of these experiences have given Craige a passion for creating high business value for small, medium, and large clients by providing comprehensive patent services. He has earned an exceptional reputation within the industry.

On Patent Offense, Craige is known among colleagues for his Litigation Quality Patent processes as the “Examiner Whisperer.”

On Patent Defense, he is known for his work in freedom to operate, patent litigation and patent re-examination as the “Patent Killer.”

Patent Assessment

why our clients choose thompson patent law

Craige and his team did a fantastic job with my provisional patent application. He asked all the right questions to help me flesh out my idea, and helped me to expand it into areas I never would’ve considered. I highly recommend reading his book, and working with Thompson Patent Law.

That critical translation from the technical engineer into the legal minds in the legal language and legal experience. And that handoff is really, really critical and that’s one of the things that I absolutely love about working with you guys.

Science & Engineering Innovation and Implementation Director

If you have an idea that is innovative you better get the protections in place, and also you guided me in that… Its so simple the way you’re really orchestrating the process. I didn’t have that much experience but I feel throughout this entire trip that we’ve been on, I’ve gained so much experience from it, that I can help others guide them to you.

I’ve had a very good experience working with Thompson law Offices over the past couple of years. They are very good at what they do. Currently they’ve obtained a patent for me in a reasonable time frame, and are pursuing yet another one. Not only are they very good, but they are cognizant of the financial aspects of this process, always taking into consideration the cost to their customers. I wouldn’t hesitate to continue to work with them on future projects.

Craige Thompson is a top-notch intellectual property attorney. I would choose him to represent me if I ever needed a patent. I have no hesitation to refer my friends, family, and clients to him for IP work. He’s easy to work with, has a good personality, a good bed-side manner, and he’s extremely good in his skills. Five-Stars!
