Patent Preparation Attorney

A patent is only as strong as the application behind it. We draft provisional and non-provisional applications with claims built to survive examination, licensing negotiations and validity challenges, not just to get allowed.

What’s Included

  • Invention disclosure and interview — We get the invention out of your head and onto paper, including the variations and alternatives you may not have thought to mention.
  • Claim strategy — Broad claims to cover the core idea, plus narrower fallback claims so there is always something enforceable.
  • Detailed specification and drawings — A written description and figures that fully support the claims and anticipate how competitors might design around them.
  • Provisional applications — A fast, lower-cost way to lock in a filing date, drafted with enough detail to actually support your later claims.
  • Non-provisional and PCT filings — Full utility applications in the US and, where it makes sense, international filings under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.

How It Works

  1. Complimentary Patent Needs AssessmentWe review your invention, your goals and your budget.
  2. Prior art searchWe look at what already exists so the claims target what is truly new.
  3. Drafting and reviewWe draft the application and refine it with you until it captures the invention accurately.
  4. FilingWe file with the USPTO and docket every deadline that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a provisional and a non-provisional patent application?

A provisional application holds a filing date for 12 months and is never examined. A non-provisional application is the full application the USPTO examines and can issue as a patent. You must file the non-provisional within 12 months to keep the provisional date.

How long does it take to prepare a patent application?

Most applications take a few weeks from the invention interview to filing, depending on complexity and how quickly we can review drafts together. Time-sensitive filings can be prioritized.

What do I need to provide?

Anything that explains how the invention works: sketches, CAD files, schematics, code descriptions, test data or notes. We will interview you to fill in the rest.

Can I write my own provisional application?

You can, but a provisional only protects what it actually describes. Thin, do-it-yourself provisionals often fail to support the claims you need later, which can cost you the filing date.

How much does patent preparation cost?

It depends on the technology and complexity. We give you a specific estimate after a Complimentary Patent Needs Assessment.
