Neuroplasticity: What is it?

Neuroplasticity: What is it?

Do you struggle with a lack of focus, anxiety or issues remembering items? There is a way to help improve all those items to improve your life. According to Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen, founder of Amen Clinics, your brain is continually reorganizing itself by forming new neural connections throughout your life, which gives you the power to make your brain better. It is called Neuroplasticity!

Here are three brain enhancing ideas that you can start today:

1. Put a jigsaw puzzle together. Personally, our family likes putting together 300-500 piece puzzles because they can be done in a couple of hours!

Fitting puzzle pieces together helps improves short-term memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.

2. Learn a new word each day. You can have your new word delivered to your mailbox by signing up at https://www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-day. You can add this to your morning routine while you are drinking that first cup of coffee!

According to research, learning new words helps our brain:

  • Create more ways of retaining information
  • Trigger the reward part of the brain which makes it a pleasurable activity
  • Build self-esteem by allowing for greater expression

3. Start a hobby. According to Dr. Amen, "Learning something new causes the brain to build connections between neurons, replacing some of those we lose over time." Hobbies can be great stress relievers which is also good for the brain.

Here are a couple of ideas to get you started: cooking, photography, wood working, gardening, painting, and hiking. Some communities offer classes which are a great way to learn new skills and meet new people.

May your day be filled with Neuroplasticity!!!
